Measuring A Nation’s Wealth

One traditional measure of a country’s wealth or success is per capita income, basically how much money on average each citizen makes.

Which makes me think of the problems in Europe. They are going broke. They are also Socialist.

One reason Europe is broke (and Socialist) is because they value their free time. Although they have less money on average than US citizens, they have lots more free time. They have longer vacations, better jobless benefits, and earlier retirement. They enjoy themselves on their time away from work. Europeans in particular are good at that.

If you were to rank countries not by monetary wealth but by “number of hours each citizen is not working”, I think the US would rank near the bottom of the world.

Something to think about.
