This Brittany Maynard thing is making me think that a reason for religion is the following: keeping the will to live! It seems counter-intuitive because we all have a survival instinct, but we also have big brains. Could it be that as humans evolved intelligence they saw death as appealing (or maybe convenient)? So, religion as a culture survived because it blunted the interest in short-circuiting nature? Note the concern about others “giving up hope” and taking their own life. If you have to encourage people not to kill themselves, it raises many issues…
